BISMARCK, N.D. (August 12, 2020) - A who's who of political insiders and lobbyists have orchestrated the filing of a lawsuit against North Dakota Secretary of State Al Jaeger today seeking to overturn his certification of Measure 3, an election security proposal, for the November ballot.

"This desperate lawsuit against our Secretary of State's decision is just going to waste our hard earned tax dollars," said Carol Sawicki, Chair of North Dakota Voters First and Fargo resident. "Drop the suit. Let the people vote. North Dakotans deserve more choices at the ballot box, not fewer."

The key provisions Measure 3 include:

  • Enhancing election security. Requires every voting machine to officially produce a paper record of each vote cast. Requires the Secretary of State to conduct a timely audit of the vote count and report the results of that audit to the public. Extends the deadline for military personnel serving overseas to receive and return their ballots.

  • Increasing voter choice and competition. Creates open primaries and allows for voters from all parties to choose the best candidates -- regardless of party affiliation. It also establishes instant runoff voting, which gives voters greater choice and ensures elections are only won by candidates who have a majority of support.

  • Putting more power with North Dakotans, not special interests. Takes away the power of long-time politicians to draw their own political boundaries - and essentially pick their own voters.

"North Dakota Voters First is exploring all options to support the decision of the Secretary of State and his defense against this baseless lawsuit," added Sawicki.
